Do It Yourself: Painting The Inside Of Your House

You might think painting the inside of your house is no more complicated than breaking a roller out of its package and getting to work. But there is a reason why professional painters are hired for so many painting jobs: painting a room can be some serious work! At the same time, however, you can save money, be in control, and maybe even enjoy it, if you learn how to paint your walls on your own!

One of the most important aspects of painting your walls is making sure you have the color you want before you get started. After all, it can be quite disheartening to spend two whole days painting a room, only to realize you wish you had painted the room something totally different.

You also need to keep in mind the fact that removing paint from carpet, wood floors, and furniture is not easy, so you definitely want to protect everything as best you can. Take the extra time and effort to move out everything that can be moved out of the room, and then, find an old blanket or get a tarp to cover everything else. You can be as careful as you want, and paint can still drip, so do your part to prevent a disaster from occurring.

Making sure you have the right equipment for the job will make it a whoe lot easier as well. Get a good, wide, sturdy brush for the edging work, and get a ladder that reaches high enough that you are not straining for the whole job. Make sure you are taking the time to do the edging work right, as well; it might be the most tedious part, but it is also the most important! Once the edging is finished, you can finally break out the rollers, dip them in the paint, and get to work on the big stuff!

Keep pets and children away from the room until the paint is dry, and remember that the room itself should be well ventilated while you work. Once you get the hang of it, painting can be somewhat easy and even a bit of fun; but don’t take any shortcuts – take the time to do things right, and you will be rewarded!

How To Avoid Rattlesnakes

The rattlesnake is one of the most dangerous creatures you could encounter while spending time outdoors, and while a rattlesnake bite is unlikely to be fatal if you get to a hospital right away, it is still far better to avoid a rattlesnake bite in the first place than to have to try and deal with it!

The first rule of avoiding rattlesnake bites is to simply avoid rattlesnakes; this means that if you see a rattlesnake (instead of trying to get a closer look, or trying to kill it!), simply go around it, as it is quite rare indeed for a rattlesnake to attack with no provocation.

If you are going to be walking or hiking in areas where you might encounter rattlesnakes (especially if you will be walking or hiking in tall grass), you should wear thick, sturdy leather boots and thick pants, as these will protect you if a rattlesnake unexpectedly strikes. You should also keep in mind the fact that rattlesnakes do their hunting at night, and during the day (especially on hot days) they will sometimes hide in holes or underneath rocks and logs, so you should never put your hand in a place where you cannot see what might be lurking, as this will put you in danger of a rattlesnake bite.

If you happen to sustain a rattlesnake bite, you should immediately seek medical attention. Do not try to emulate the old Western movies by “sucking out” the venom, and do not apply ice to the area; instead, simply wrap the area above the bite tightly enough to slightly slow the flow of blood, keep the bite slightly below the level of your heart, and get to a hospital!

If a rattlesnake does bite you, your chances of survival are high – but you can avoid the effects, the pain, and the headache of a rattlesnake bite by simply making sure you know how to avoid rattlesnakes in the first place.

Yoga for Beginners

Long ago in India, Hinduism and Buddhism had a physical practice of well-being and spiritual commitment called yoga.  Today, two types of this traditional practice exist that have been tailored to fit the modern world. These new practices are called Ashtanga and Anusara. Ashtanga

Ashtanga yoga was brought to the western world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915 – 2009).

He taught Ashtanga, which concentrates on an intense sweat that purifies the body created by internal heat.

Ashtanga uses breathing exercises in conjunction with a series of yoga poses to create a calm mind and a strong body.

The translation of Ashtanga is “eight-limbed yoga”.

These “limbs” are principles set forth in the Yoga Sutras.

These limbs consist of moral-codes, self-purification and study, posture, breath control, sense control, concentration, meditation, and absorption into the universe.

The purpose of Ashtanga is to become proficient in all of these goals.

Anusara

In 1997, John Friend founded Anusara yoga, creating a new form of an ancient practice.

Aligning with the Divine,” was Friend’s purpose, according to the official Anusara website.

When you hear the word yoga, you may think of people who chant “Om”; this is Anusara yoga.

A meditative state enhanced by synchronized breathing and poses assists one in aligning with the Divine.

Making your choice

When you are making your decision between these two practices, it is best to weigh all of their similarities and differences in relation to your personality. Ashtanga is a great practice for an athletic and very structured type of person.

It will get you onto the path to becoming a better person while simultaneously giving you a great workout.

Anusara focuses more on doing your best rather than achieving perfection.

The purpose of Anusara is also different than Ashtanga, but the workout is comprable.

Self-peace and being content with the world around you is the key to Anusara.

This goodness will aid in connection with the Divine.

Regardless of which practice you choose, a Yoga Mat is vital!

Will I Be Safe Using Bear Mace?

When you are going hiking or camping in bear country (which is just about anywhere in North America where you might conceivably go hiking or camping!), you will want to make sure you know how to protect yourself from bears. While you can certainly improve your situation by wearing bells on your belt loops and storing your food away from your tent, neither of these will be especially useful if you startle as bear, or if you accidentally come between a bear and its cubs.

While you might have seen that many sports and outdoors stores sell “bear spray” (or “bear mace”), it is natural to wonder whether such a product actually works; after all, the last thing you would want would be to spray a bear in the face with something, and for it to have no effect but to further enrage the bear!

Bear mace is pretty much the same product as regular mace, except that the size of a bear is accounted for by a higher concentration (which means a more powerful form of mace), and when used properly, bear mace truly does work – and if you search around online, you will find many first-hand accounts of its effectiveness!

Guard Alaska Bear Defense Spray is the best product when it comes to bear mace, as it is designed for use on grizzly bears and is therefore effective on every type of bear; also, you can save ten dollars on Guard Alaska Bear Defense Spray when you shop for it on Amazon.

Bear mace is usually designed to spray up to 30 feet, which means that you will be able to use it before the bear gets too close, and while it will spray continuously for about eight seconds, it is more effective if you use it in short bursts.

Avoiding bears altogether is your best bet for staying safe from bears, but if you are going to be spending time in bear country, bring some bear mace with you, and be ready to use it in case you come across a bear, or in case a bear attacks!

Preparing The Coals On A Charcoal Grill

An electric grill offers the benefit of great convenience, as you will be able to cook by simply flipping a switch or pressing a button, but even in spite of the convenience provided by an electric grill, a lot of people cannot ditch their charcoal grill because of the superior taste it provides; if you have a charcoal grill yourself, one thing you will want to realize is that starting your coals with lighter fluid is the wrong way to do it, as using lighter fluid will give your food an inferior taste, which completely nullifies the benefits of grilling your food on a charcoal grill.

In order to go about firing up your charcoal grill properly, the first thing you will want to do is remove both of the metal grates inside the grill, and then you will want to ball up some sheets of newspaper and place them in the bottom; make sure these balls of newspaper are not clumped so tightly together that the fire cannot get going, and make sure they are not so tightly wadded that no air gets in.

Once the balled-up newspaper is in place, replace the lower grate and stack your coals over the newspaper in a pyramid formation; in figuring out how many coals you should use, know that there should be enough coals to cover all of the grate if you spread them out, without any of them stacking on top of others.

You can light the newspaper once you have reached this point, and this should get the coals going; you will still want to keep an eye on things, however, as it might take a couple times to get the coals to take (if it is taking a while, consider opening the air vent at the bottom of the grill to get some airflow).

Once you have reached this point you will be just about ready to cook; give the coals about ten or fifteen minutes to get hot from bottom to top, and then you will be able to spread the coals out across the bottom grate, put the cooking grate over the coals, and throw your meat on the grill; if you have followed these steps properly, you will have coals that are hot and perfect for cooking, and in no time at all, you will have a delicious meal that you would not be able to match on a gas grill.

Basic Puppy Training Tips

As soon as you purchase a puppy, you had best have a game plan in place as to how you are going to train him. You will need to remember to be consistant, gentile, and patient while your puppy begins to learn.

Exercise your puppy before you try to do any training with him. Getting some of that bouncy puppy energy burned off is a great plan before you train. One great way to do this is to play tag with your puppy. You can also use this to begin to teach your puppy to learn his name and the “come” command. Start by running away from yoru puppy and then say come. Expect your puppy to already be headed your way. As soon as your puppy gets to you give him some love and a treat. It also works well if you have two people who can play this game. Get the puppy between you and your partner. Excitely say come to your puppy and when he comes give him a treat.  It is now the other persons turn to do the same.

Sit is another important skill to teach. This can easily be done by getting their attention with a piece of food slowly bring is up and over their head. As soon as your pup’s butt hits the floor give him the food. Use the same technique but now begin to use the word sit as the puppy begins to sit down.  As soon as the butt hits for floor give the treat.

I also like to teach a dog to create. When my dogs are young I do like to have the option of putting them in a create when I am out of the house. You can teach your puppy this by playing a game with them. When your puppy is near your create toss a piece of food in. As they walk in say create (or whatever command you wish to use). Momentarily shut the door, and then let them back out. Do this a few times every day, and slowly increase the time the door is closed.

Puppy obedience classes are also a great way to begin traning your dog. This is a great idea as your puppy will get socialized with other dogs and people and you can pick up some great tips on training and dog care. Consistancy is the key to any training.  You must keep this in mind.

Tips For “Getting Out Of The House” When You Need To, Without Spending Money

Oftentimes, you might find yourself feeling like you simply need to “get out of the house” – and this is especially the case for those who either work from home or spend most of their time at home. One of the problems with “getting out of the house,” however is the fact that getting out of the house also usually entails spending money – either at a coffee shop, or at a deli, or just as you burn gas by driving around!

One great way for you to avoid spending money as you “get out of the house” is to go for a walk; by going for a walk, you can unwind in much the same way you would by driving around, but you can walk around your neighborhood and spend no money on gas, or you can drive to a nearby park or forest and only have to drive a short way.

A lot of people are also able to unwind quite well by exercising; you can exercise by going for a jog, or – if you have gym membership – you can drive there and get in a workout to relieve you of your tension.

Of course, there will also be times when you have no interest at all in physical exertion; if this is the case, you can still “get out of the house” without spending money by driving to that same park where you would go for a walk, but by reading a book or lounging in the sun instead!

And finally, try to find a relaxing, “out of the house” activity that you enjoy doing – something such as painting, or photography, or fishing – and whenever you need to get out of your house for a bit, you can travel to a peaceful spot and engage in this activity.

When the tension of being home all day has started to build up, it can be nice to get out of the house; it can be even nicer, however, to get out of the house without having to spend money, and when you follow these tips, you will be able to do exactly that!

Tips For Keeping Your Coffee Hot!

For the most part, there are two types of “big coffee drinkers” – those who tend to drink their coffee quickly, and those who tend to drink their coffee slowly, savoring it as they make their way through the mug; of course, if you are the kind of coffee drinker who goes through a cup of coffee rapidly, you will not have to worry about keeping your coffee hot, but if you are the kind of person who likes to savor your coffee, keeping your coffee hot can be a big problem (especially because it is a lot more difficult to “savor” that coffee when it gets to be lukewarm or room temperature!).

If you work from home (or there is a coffee pot that you keep on your desk at work), one way to keep your coffee hot is to leave it in the pot, on the burner, and to only pour small cups at a time; of course, not everyone has the flexibility to do this – and what’s more, leaving the coffee on the burner often tends to give it a “burnt” flavor that is not exactly desirable for someone who is a coffee lover.

Another option for keeping your coffee hot – and one that works well if you work in an office where you are in one place for most of the day – is to get a coffee warmer. With a coffee warmer, you will be able to set your mug down and know that it will remain hot – providing you with “sipping hot coffee” each time you pick it back up.

But maybe the best approach for keeping your coffee hot is to get a good thermos – one that has the ability to keep your coffee hot for hours at a time; with one such thermos, you can prepare your coffee, can seal the lid, and can then go through your day knowing that the coffee will be hot each time you go to take a sip!

The issue of “making sure coffee stays hot” might seem like something that is minor – but if you are a big coffee drinker, you know what a big deal this can be, and now, you also know what you can do to keep your coffee hot yourself!

Tips For Keeping Your Beard Healthy

If you recently decided to start growing a permanent beard, you might have been under the false impression that you would simply need to watch and wait, but as any beard aficionado can tell you, it takes a little more work than this to have a beard that looks great! In order to have a beard that does more than just exist – that instead “looks great” as well – you will want to make sure you are aware of these important things.

Shampoo is important: The idea of shampooing your beard might never have occurred to you, but just as it is important that you keep the hair on your head clean, it is also important that you keep the hair on your face clean by shampooing it regularly – and of course, this becomes increasingly important as your beard increases in length!

Conditioner is also important: You should also condition your beard after you have shampooed it; even though your beard is always going to be more coarse than the hair on your head, you can make it softer to the touch (and softer “to the look”) if you take care of it with regular application of conditioner.

Check out the Facial Hair Handbook by the two time World Beard Champion.

Trim it up: If you are keeping your beard short, you are fully aware of the fact that you will have to trim it regularly, but what you might not have realized is that it will also be important for you to regularly trim your beard if you are keeping it long! Keep close watch on your beard – shaving the areas around your beard so you don’t look scraggly, while also taking scissors to any stray hairs that are getting out of line or tampering with the shape of your beard.

Growing the perfect beard is a journey, and much of what you will come to learn about beards will reach you through experience; but as you go through the beard-growing experience on your own, these tips will give you a great foundation upon which you can build.

How To Build A “Platform” As A Non-Fiction Writer

If you have a dream of writing a non-fiction book, one of the first things you will discover when you start to research “how to get published” is that agents and editors are looking to find out what sort of “platform” you have. This means that agents and editors (who make the decisions for publishing houses) want to see that you have a “following,” and want to know what sort of expertise you have in the area you are writing about – expertise that will cause someone who has never heard of you to assume you are an expert, and to pick up your book!

At this point, lots of aspiring non-fiction writers decide to give up on their dream, thinking, “I don’t have any sort of platform” – failing to realize that even if they do not have a platform, they can still build one!

The sooner you begin building your platform, the better off you will be; if you have already made significant progress into your non-fiction manuscript, this is okay, but if you are in a position to do so, you should try to start building your platform even before you start working on the manuscript itself!

Your goal, in building your platform, is to have a “loyal readership” that agents and editors will be able to see; this means that you need a website on which people can “publicly follow,” you need a facebook page that people can “like,” and you need a Twitter account that people can follow! It will be important that you have “numbers” backing you up when you start to approach agents and editors with your work, and the best way to get the numbers to grow is to remain active; blog several times each week (portraying yourself as an “expert”), Tweet several times per day, and keep your facebook page filled with links.

Harness The Power Of Twitter Tools!

As you begin to pay consistent attention to your websites, you will find that your numbers begin to consistently grow; and the more often you “water” your sites, the more quickly your readership (what the publishing world will call your “platform”) will grow!
